“Why PDP leaders, Govs. are joining APC” – Wike

Wike on PDP defection

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, yesterday attributed the recent defections of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors and leaders to the capacity and decisive leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking at the flag-off of construction work on the main carriageways of the outer southern expressway in Abuja, Wike said those who once criticized the president are now aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC).

“I have been watching on television and social media. People who said I want to destabilise the party are now in the APC. If anything, they should commend me for helping pave their way”, Wike said.

He emphasized that Tinubu’s leadership has ensured that states have sufficient resources to pay salaries and embark on development projects, unlike the previous system where governors often struggled to fund basic activities.

“Every state now has money not only to pay salaries but also to carry out government projects. No governor will leave debts for their successors as it used to happen”,  he said.

Wike noted that the recent defections, including Governor Peter Mbah, of Enugu state and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa, are indicative of a broader recognition of the benefits of supporting Tinubu’s administration. With these moves, the number of PDP governors has dropped from 11 in October 2024 to eight.

The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, described the expressway project as a bold step to ease traffic, stimulate economic activity, and enhance mobility for residents. She praised Wike for transforming the FCT into a “construction powerhouse” and a model of national renewal under Tinubu’s leadership.
